Internal migration, population trends, and the regional influence of towns in the Albury-Wodonga and Wagga Wagga area

Abstract

The Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers together drain one oT the richest and most agriculturally significant areas of Australia. Both rivers rise in the Snowy Mountains and thence flow west to begin their long journey across the south-eastern portion of the continent. Situated on each river, well below the mountains themselves but some miles above where they respectively debouch from the upland country on to the dry riverine plain, are the rival cities of Albury and Wagga Wagga. These two centres are located about 80 miles apart in the state of New South Wales, and have long competed for regional suzerainty over the area known as the Riverina, i.e., the vast alluvial plain lying between the Murray and the Murrumbidgee.
