Education for economic development in the South Pacific

Abstract

In recent years rates of economic growth have been low in the island nations of the South Pacific. Shortages of educated la bour are an important contributor to poor economic perform ance. This volume brings together a series of studies on edu cational development in the region. An overview surveying major issues of curriculum and financing is followed by an ex amination of ethnic differences in educational attainment in Fiji. The next study contrasts the curriculum policies being followed in Western Samoa and Tonga. This is followed by studies which survey recent policy developments in Vanuatu and evaluate the role of fees for education in the Solomon Islands. The volume concludes with an evaluation of the past and future role of Australian aid. Show more
