Abstract
Imposing a hiatus on normal business is a double-edged sword. It both allows for combating the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) but it also cuts food supplies and threatens the livelihoods it is meant to protect. Serious shortages of fresh food in Lae were experienced during a nationwide state of emergency lockdown in Papua New Guinea (PNG) from 23 March to 6 April 2020. This In Brief describes the impacts of the lockdown on fresh food supply in Lae city and what has been done since it was lifted.
