Abstract

This paper analyses the performance of the manufacturing sector in the context of the new export-oriented economic policies pursued by the Fiji government in the last eight years. Four major indicators of the performance of the manufacturing sector are examined: growth of value-added, share of the manufacturing in the national GDP, growth in employment, and exports. It also examines problems in the sector, identifying specifically manufacturing sector problems and problems facing the country as a whole, but impinging on manufacturing. The study finds that the performance of the manufacturing has been good to excellent, although significant problems remain. These problems need to be addressed urgently for Fiji to realise its full development potential.
