Abstract

The proton, as well as existing as a single particle, can have one or two electrons hound to it. With one electron we have the hydrogen atom and with two, the negative hydrogen ion. Considering the hare proton as a positive hydrogen ion, we talk of the three charge states of hydrogen: positive, negative and neutral.
