Abstract

A membership certificate printed in the format of a banner like those carried in Eight Hour Day processions. The imagery includes two men in white aprons and bakers' hats clasping hands above a bushel of wheat and below a slogan: United to Assist, not to Injure. At the figures' feet is depicted a ribbon with the motto: United We Stand . Divided We Fall. In the upper centre is a coat of arms between an emu and a kangaroo. The moustached baker holds a baker's paddle in his left hand while his bearded colleague carries a staff with white fabric at the end. Three interlaced eights symbolize the number of hours each of Recreation, Labour and Rest that constitute a fair working day. This message is emphasised in cameo windows that show cherubs reading, a bee hive, and a cherub reclining. Above the form part of the certificate is a scene in a bakery where different bakers' activities are depicted. This last scene is not shown on the banners in T013-32-10 and T013-32-12 (both 1913) but it is present on the somewhat different format banner in T013-32-29A (1919).
