Abstract
This monograph begins with a comparison between the international situation as it is in 1984 and as it was just before World War I broke out. It perceives the biggest threats to world peace is lying within what is identified as Near East Major: a broad arc of territories expanding from Greece through to India. It expresses an apprehension of the two superpowers becoming involved in far-flung though non-nuclear confrontation and conflict; and relates this to what the author sees as an unbreakable deadlock between Washington and Moscow in respect of strategic nuclear deterrence. The study also urges the West to evolve a new Grand Strategy, one that would pay more attention to the promotion of economic stability and democratic values.
