Description

A native of Longmen in modern Shaanxi, and a son of Sima Tan. At ten he was already a good scholar. On the death of his father, BC 110, he stepped into the hereditary post of Grand Astrologer. He continued the historical work begun by his father, the Shiji, Historical records. Subsequently he fell into disgrace and was subjected to castration by the emperor, who on regretting his action appointed him to the post of Minister of State. he is sometimes referred to as tai shi gong.
