Description

This type of large, hemi-spherical clay jar was probably used as a storage vessel. The narrow neck opening could be plugged with a wooden stopper. The two loop handles were attached at the centre of the jar giving a firm hold. The jar is painted and is of the Yangshao type, from Gansu province. the geometrical design of cowrie-like shapes symbolising fertility is painted in white, black and red. -- h: 40 cm.
