Abstract

Description

Muslim art, unlike Hindu art, was secular in approach, intended to instruct and entertain. Its subjects were man and the natural world, and the texts illustrated by Muslim painters included poetry, histories, and treatises on such subjects as military strategy, horsemanship, lovemaking, and cookery. This secular orientation remains apparent in Mughal art, in the naturalistic portrayal of individual figures and specific landscapes.
