Abstract

Panoramic view of the city seen from the heights of a busy and wide unsealed road. Large numbers of people and their activities are depicted along with horses, horsedrawn carriages and a bullock cart. Among the many details depicted are men with whips, a street hawker with a tray, flagpoles, a weathervane, a lantern and shop awnings. Gill also sketched various incidents including a foreground shouting match, a band playing and a rider struggling with a horse. Named buildings visible are Bears Hors.., the Australian Hotel, the Horse Repository, Lilburne & Anslow Auctioneers and the Plough Inn. According to the Melbourne Directory of 1857 one of the buildings on the right side below the Australian Hotel was the premises of Richard Goldsbrough, Wool Broker. In 1888 the businesses of Goldsbrough and Thomas Sutcliffe Mort amalgamated to form the company that collected these engravings.
