Abstract
Description
The raga is a fixed combination of musical or visual forms used to convey certain perceptions associated with situation and mood. A predetermined sequence of notes or visual shapes, the raga is ornamented by the individual musician or painter. The six primary ragas are amplified by certain raginis or variations. In painting, ragas are represented as rajas, or kings, and raginis as royal consorts. The painting of the Malavi Ragini has the schematic, compartmentalized composition, bright colours, and senuous forms of the Indian tradition. The eyes of the figures are expressively leaf-shaped. Only the Muslim architecture reveals foreign influence.
