Abstract

Photograph of monks and Aborigines in front of a building in a setting of paddocks and trees. Most of the monks are bearded and wear dark coloured habits and wide brimmed hats. The building features walls of inlaid rough stone highlighted by white-painted window surrounds, pilasters and front entrance façade. On the left is a bell-ringing tower made of tree trunks. The monastery was founded as a mission for Aborigines in 1846 by two Spanish Benedictine monks, Fathers Salvado and Serra. New Norcia is located on the Moore River about 100 kilometres north-east of Perth.
