Abstract

Description

This is a detail from the 18 foot high rock relief, high up on a cliff face overlooking the road leading from the Iranian plateau to the Mesopotamian plain. The relief portrays Darius in the traditional posture of victor with his foot on the fallen enemy, Gaumata the Magian. The tri-lingual inscription (in Old Persian, Akkadian and Elamite) which accompanies it played a part in the story of the decipherment of cuneiform when Rawlinson had himself suspended from the cliff face so that he could copy it.
