Abstract
Description
Visnu wakes at the beginning of the cosmic day. He lies in the coils of the serpent Sesa or Ananta. His spouse Laksmi rubs his feet. From his navel emerges a logus containing Brahma the creator, with the four Vedas. Left: Hanuman. Right: his half-human, half-eagle mount (vahana), Garuda. Behind him stand (left to right) Karttikeya (Skanda), Ganesa, and Siva. The divinity with the horse's head is probably intended to represent a gandharva (heavenly musician), a class of demigod which is sometimes depicted thus. Nandi, the bull of Siva, sits between Visnu and the other gods. Prof. Basham cannot identify the musician on the left or the royal personage on the right
