Abstract

The Yakshi, as we mentioned earlier, is the favorite pillar decoration of Mathuran sculptors, As a tutelary deity, her presence at the stupa was necessary, all the better for the craftsmen, who were more than happy to use her as a motif, This Yakshi stands on her guyhaka in a languid pose characteristic of a special Yakshi type described in literature as Alasa Kanya: amorous females filled with the intoxication of love, There is much in the treatment of this figure to suggest this dreamy state, curves, not angles, describe her form, -- Calcutta, Indian Museum,
