Abstract

In 1944 staff at Sydney newspapers The Herald, The Telegraph, The Sun and The Mirror struck for a 40-hour week. The Australian Council of Trade Unions lodged a claim for a 40-hour week in 1946 and, two years later, the case was won. The 40-hour week began on 1 January 1948.
