Abstract
Description
Daiko Imai, a Soto Zen priest, seated before the shrine of Kifukuji in Tokyo. This priest is famous for his surrealist paintings, a form of art which he took up as a release from the pressures resulting from his compulsory military service during the war. Here he is beginning a memorial service on the anniversary of the death of a relative of the people who arranged for the service. The fees from memorial services are the chief means of support for such a temple.
