Abstract

View of the Yarra River with the buildings of Melbourne in the background. In the right foreground is a rowing boat with two men, one in a top hat. The ships depicted include a paddle steamer and various types of sailing ship. A tent encampment can be seen on the right beyond a reed bed. Abattoirs and other trades that needed water tended to congregate along the river. From 1852, many gold rush migrants found shelter among the wharves, and some old abattoirs were made available for temporary accommodation.
