Sydney accident train decorated to celebrate Federation
Abstract
Photograph of the crew on and alongside the decorated carriages, carts and crane of the Sydney accident train. The train is adorned with fabric, bunting, streamers, flags, strings of pennants and palm foliage. UNITED is painted on the side of one carriage, and FEDERATION on the cart fabric. The flags include a white one with the Union Jack in a cross in the top left hand corner and a similar one without the cross. LOCO DEPT SYDNEY is painted on the cart nearest the right. The train is in front of various buildings, probably the Eveleigh maintenance workshops. For thirteen years, William Ellis was examining fitter and fitter in charge of the Sydney accident train. Named portrait photographs of Ellis make it possible to identify him as the man on the ground, second from the right.
