Where the western gate was last to be added to the stupa, the southern gate was the first, It bears decorative elements popular to the literary traditions of the Jainas who founded a second religious cult at about the time Buddhism was on the rise, The scenes comprising the decoration are again the Jatakas of Buddha's life, but some portions are dedicated to the seven other Buddhas in abbreviated aniconic fashion as either Bodhi trees or stupas, So-called 'false capitals' separate the lintels on the pillars and are carved with inwardly facing horsemen or other courtly images,
