Abstract

View of a large number of people, vehicles and animals in front of the Post Office adorned with verandas and a domed clock tower. The crowd includes men in top hats, a man carrying a basket, a trooper on horseback and a woman driving a bullock cart. There are also various types of horsedrawn carriages. The clock was paid for by public subscription and the tower built subsequent to the main structure in order to accommodate it. Established in 1841, the Post Office was very much the centre of community life by the mid 1850s as many of the diggers visited it in the hope of getting news from home.
