Abstract

Description

Bears the seal of Shah Jahan's library, so was presumably owned before him by Jahangir. It was subsequently passed to Jonathan Scott, the orientalist and Persian secretary to Warren Hastings (1754-1829). On the verso. is the inscription: 'An Indian Musician playing upon an instrument called Bin, a sort of double lute. Panton Plymley 1790 from Jonathan Scott Esq of Netley.' Murray writes: 'Scott, I believe, became (after his return to England in 1785) tutor to the family of Archdeacon Plymley of Shropshire, and Netley is in that county (i.e. not the better-known Netley near Southampton).
