Abstract
Description
This remarkable temple was built in the late twelfth century, first as a Buddhist temple with the faces of Avalokitesvara sculptures on the numerous towers. Later, it was made over into a Siva temple by the Hindu conquerors, and then restored to Buddhism again, but many of the figures of Avalokitesvara and the Buddhas had been defaced. When it was constructed the effect was more of a work of sculpture than of architecture.
