Abstract
Description
As soon as he had gained his independence, Qutb-ud-Din had a large mosque built from the remains of several Hindu temples, called the Quwwatul-Islam, as well as a gigantic minaret which he was unable to complete. Only its first storey was erected. His successor Iltutmish built the following three. The fifth storey was added by Firoz Shah Tughluq, after the building had been struck by lightning. In 1803 it was again damaged by an earth tremor and was repaired in the following years. It has 379 steps and is 243 feet high. At its foot one can still see the arcades of the wings of the Quwwatul-Islam mosque built by Iltutmish.
