Abstract

Description

Stylistically, this Abhayamudra Buddha (raising the hand in the protective gesture) is the brother of the more complete standing figure in slide 17, The additional elements are a mushroom-like parasol over the figure representing both a royal canopy and the lotus to distinguish the Buddha beneath it as both kingly and saintly, The interesting 'string-less' drapery has appeared once more allowing the artist who made the figure the opportunity to simulate work on the nude, for a very subtle attempt has been made to reduce the covering effect of the robe to the merest suggestion, Carving is very fine, as the chunar sandstone easily permits, and the face has a softer outline composed of double reflex curves instead of simple geometric curves,
