dc.descriptionVery few free-standing Buddhist structures survive from the Gupta period, for more concentration was being put on large scale cut-rock architecture at that period, A very interesting example of one free-standing construction, however, is in the category of devotional shrines: the fifth century Temple No. 17 near the Great Stupa at Sanchi: It is a single-celled building with a relatively large porch supported by stone columns, The temple is probably representative of the private devotional movement's influence on architecture during the Gupta Period, for it was certainly not meant to be visited by large numbers of people for group worship, The flat roof is not an uncommon feature in Indian buildings, and despite its vague similarity to Greek and Roman temples, is not necessarily related to them,en_AU
