Abstract

Description

Each morning from six until seven-thirty the followers of the Yuseiji sect gather for worship which consists chiefly of chanting Namu Myo Horengekyo, 'Adoration to the Suddharma Pundarika Sutra', while beating small wooden sticks together. The chanting is led by priests and accompanied by large drums. As it continues, the chanting has an electric effect on the participants who are chiefly working people who have come to the temple before going to work. A goodly number of children also take part. At the side of the temple the people can get holy water which has been blessed by the priests and which cures their ills
many of them take bottles of the water home for members of their family who are ill, or to drink before undertaking a venture in which they wish to be successful.
