Votive stupas also increased in number during the Kushan period, these to be erected along with the little shrines containing votive statuary around the vicinity of the larger stupa, The example in our slide is of an unusual shape, in terms of the styles of stupas being built at that time, and really appears to be an abstract of a stupa rather than a representation of one, At the base are carvings showing a number of suggested architraves, each housing a meditating Buddha, above this are two discs with scenes from Buddha's life, At the paramount position is a slightly elongated sphere symbolizing the dome of the stupa, and in this case it has no crowning elements, Such a stupa would not have been difficult to raise and could have been produced in a relatively short time, This is in keeping with the fact that many of their kind were in heavy demand, -- Mathura, Curzon Museum,en_AU
