Abstract

Description

Some time after Mahinda came to Ceylon, he sent back to Asoka his father asking that his sister, the nun Sanghamitta, be allowed to come to Ceylon to found the order of nuns. When she arrived, she brought with her a shoot from the sacred Bodhi tree at Buddhagaya. There is good evidence that this is the tree which was planted in Anuradharupa some 2200 years ago and has been an objject of devout pilgrimage ever since that time.
