Abstract

Description

The full development of the southern style tower appears in the Dharmaraja Rath. One could properly describe the roofline of this Rath as a 'stepped pyramid,' while the railing surrounding the tower still clearly shows vestiges of the model shrines, which make the entire Rath look like a city wall with lookout posts arranged across the top. A marked emphasis on the horizontal aspects of the roof line is also evident in the Dharmaraja Rath while the capstone does less to negate and more to complete the architectural nature of the shrine as a whole. This capstone is more in proportion to the rest of the building and repeats the general shape of the miniature 'out-post' domes and chaitya window motifs more than did the mushroom-like capstone of the Arjan Rath. The supported wall beneath the roof has been reduced in height. The columns and the niches formed between them are deeply cut sculptural units, giving a certain relief from the blank solid walls formerly seen in the Ganesha and Sahadeva Nakula Raths.
