Abstract

View of figures, animals and activities on open land in front of buildings in the town of Castlemaine. The people include horsemen, a Chinese man carrying vessels on a pole and a man with a gun and swags. On the left is a cart pulled by a horse, but the other vehicles in the picture are drawn by bullocks. A shop sign on a timber building with a striped awning advertises Earthenware and Glassware. Gill's sketch was executed in 1855 and shows Castlemaine at a time of rapid growth four years after gold was discovered at the Mount Alexander goldfields.
