Abstract

In 2004 the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and a consortium of other State and Federal agency envisioned a network for the sharing of information resources. The network was to provide for the search, discovery and acquisition of restricted and non-restricted information resources. Custodians, organizations the expose information resources, must maintain control of the information resources they provide to the network. The development of the National Data Network (NDN) began in 2004. The NDN is an Open Source development . That which leverages exiting Open Source development projects from other Australian and overseas organizations . Using Open Source software for the development of the NDN not only reduces the cost barriers for organizations that will ultimately use the NDN, but also widens the opportunities for collaborative development. This presentation will focus on the metadata and data management that is required for the Search and Discovery of Information Resources exposed by the NDN.
