Abstract

Description

The Ramayana, one of the oldest Sanskrit epics, details the adventures of Rama, Vishnu's seventh incarnation. Hindu worship of the god Vishnu in his various incarnations can be traced back as far as the fourth century A.D. Known as Vaishnavism, the movement became widespread in the late fourteenth century, when the classical Sanskrit text of the Bhagavad-Gita, or Song of God, was translated into vernacular. Scenes from the Ramayana were a popular theme in the Indian miniature tradition.
