Description
This charming group in sand-stone, probably from the Lingaraja, is a good illustration of the style, at once simple and graceful, of Orissan artists at the end of the 11th century. The features are fine, the expression smiling. The female figure is opulently portrayed. A long nose distinguishes these women from those of other styles. The child possesses the same characteristics. It is true that in the art of every country children are most often shown with adult heads. This representation of motherhood in its gentleness of gesture is fit to take its place beside the most beautiful portrayals of motherhood in Western art. India museum, Calcutta.
