Abstract

Description

At the ends of the porch, over the elephants and the frieze of the Guptan Buddhas, are bands of carvings repeating the vedika and chaitya window motifs like so many tiny facades in the side of a great cliff, The effect produced is a screen of tiny chaitya windows, none of which is intending to emit light but rather intending to be sculpted by light as it falls across the surface of the wall, The very simple repetition of forms and their brittle wooden appearance suggests the wooden prototypes from which they were derived, [formerly IA-486, number crossed out and replaced with IA-475(8)]
