We notice in this detail that the so-called 'false capitals' separating the lintels are probably termed thus because they merely bear capital-like figures, That is, animals or horsemen (or other riders) placed back to back as if carved in the round, At the ends of the lintel, giving an organic flavor to the stone, are spirals not symbolically connected to the 'Great Wheel' images but possibly of reference to the eight Buddha's seven predecessors: the spiral has seven coils, The elephants facing toward the opening of the gate are connected to the lintel decoration further in showing elephants paying homage to the stupa (see slide 30),en_AU
