Most of the monks are bearded and wear dark coloured habits and wide brimmed hats. The building features walls of inlaid rough stone highlighted by white-painted window surrounds, pilasters and front entrance façade. On the left is a bell-ringing tower made of tree trunks. The monastery was founded as a mission for Aborigines in 1846 by two Spanish Benedictine monks, Fathers Salvado and Serra. New Norcia is located on the Moore River about 100 kilometres north-east of Perth.62334300 bytesphotographb&w15.1cm x 19.8cmimage/tiffen-AUThis image is provided for research purposes only and must not be reproduced without the prior permission of the Archives Program, Australian National University.PhotographsviewsmonksAboriginal peoples (Australians)monasteriesbuildings, structures & establishmentsbell towershatsNew Norcia, a Benedictine monastery on the Moore River about 80 miles N.E. of Perth, Western Australia.
