The fires destroyed most of the Australian National University's Mount Stromlo Observatory, including the original observatory building, workshops, several telescopes and staff homes. Walter Duffield was the inaugural director of the Commonwealth Solar Observatory (Mount Stromlo Observatory) from 1924 until his death in 1929.
