One baker carries the organisation's furled banner and the float on the left displays a General Workers Union banner with the mottos: Unity, Concord; and the images of a hand clasp, black swans and number eights. The floats are participating in an Eight Hour Day parade. The bakers present a tableau of a working bakery complete with an oven and painted brick walls decorated with loaves of bread. Many of the loaves have been made into figures of eight. The bakers usually distributed the bread to the public during the procession. The name G. Whitehead can be seen on the tray of the vehicle. There are also several onlookers, including a small boy. The location is probably Fremantle Port because the Trades Hall erected there in 1904 became the focus for Eight Hour and May Day processions.13709304 bytesBlack and white photograph14.8cm x 20.5cm (image)25cm x 30cm (mount).image/tiffen-AUThis image is provided for research purposes only and must not be reproduced without the prior permission of the Archives Program, Australian National University.Trade unionistsbakersbakeriesfood production workersphotographic studiosprocessionsholidaysfloats (processions)bannersslogansbreadclothinguniformsapronshatsovens (cooking)horsedrawn vehiclesPortion of Perth and Fremantle bakers' working display2004-02-25
