The new approach is developed by applying methods from linear quadratic optimal control theory. This leads to a method for model validation and fault diagnosis which is based around a robust Kalman filter type structure.1This work was supported by the Australian Research Council. 2Senior Lecturer, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Western Australia, Nedlands, Perth, Western Australia, Australia. 3Associate Professor, School of Electrical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, Australia.10enFault diagnosisModel validationState estimationUncertain systemsNew approach to model validation and fault diagnosis199710.1023/A:10226761069030031491397
