First, by relating subsequent occupations to those of first jobs we can, in the context of multinomial logit specifications, establish patterns of career paths. Our estimates reveal a high degree of occupational mobility. Both initial education level and additional education are important determinants of this mobility. The paper also derives estimates from probability models which take account of a ranking among occupations. These differ substantially from those which eschew such a ranking and cast doubt cxi the findings of much previous research.31 p.en-AUAuthor/s retain copyrightOn the determination of occupational attainment and mobility / Paul W.
