It was lying face downwards and thousands of people walked over it without suspecting its existence. It was discovered when the road was repaired. The style is the same as that of the Elephanta carvings, and one may rightly wonder if the face of the Mahesamurti was not the work of the same artist. The whole relief shows an astonishing feeling for composition. The stone is now where it was discovered.
