The motion of a glow discharge under the influence of a transverse magnetic field
Abstract
This thesis describes an experimental study of the motion of a glow discharge under the influence of a strong transverse magnetic field, at moderate gas pressures. Conditions were generally such that WeTe was of the order of 1, where We is the electron cyclotron frequency, and Te the mean time between the collisions of an electron with neutral gas molecules. Experiments were mostly performed with discharge currents of the order of tens of milliamperes, so that the directed velocity given to the gas by the ions and electrons of the moving discharge was negligible compared with the velocity of the discharge.
