China's Growing Presence in the Pacific Region and Local Reactions

Abstract

The rise of China has become a prominent phenomenon in international relations. In recent years, Beijing has made enormous efforts to boost its influence overseas. The Pacific region, consisting of 14 sovereign island states and a few island territories, is no exception. Since 2006, China’s presence in the region has become more visible. In addition to the increasing number of high-level visits, Chinese aid projects and commercial investment have also grown rapidly. Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the largest and most populous country in the Pacific. It is also China’s principal diplomatic and economic partner in the region. Show more
