Abstract
The potential of SPOT satellite remote sensing to assist in mapping and monitoring smallholder and plantation cocoa production is examined, using the Gazelle Peninsula as a case study. A combination of data enhancement techniques were used to improve the results from the raw data. These are explained and discussed. Results indicate that it is possible to map and monitor changes and subtle differences in plantations, but the nature of smallholder gardens limits the usefulness of multispectral imagery at this level of production. Finally, a comparison of SPOT and Landsat TM imagery for monitoring agricultural production is made.
