Australian Chamber Orchestra, Live in concert - Brahms Symphonies 3 & 4

Abstract

The two final masterful symphonies of Johannes Brahms as interpreted by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, directed by Richard Tognetti were recorded live in the Sydney Performances of the National tours of each symphony. This recording is defined by the historically informed performance of the time, with use of string portamento, flexibility in tempo and a wooden flute sound using a sparing and selective vibrato. Our orchestra expanded for these performances to include the unique colours of wind instruments from Brahmss own world. The resulting sound, in the words of The Sydney Morning Heralds review, is a revelation: superbly blended horns and trumpets without the bright blare of a modern symphonic sound, an agile, liquid tone from flutes and clarinets and a gorgeous warmth in the lower wind and brass, all matched with a string sound with a bold but never harsh attack.
