The HMAS Creswell Breakwater Tramway

Abstract

The Royal Australian Naval College (RANC), also known as HMAS Creswell since 1958, has an idyllic location on the south-west shores of Jervis Bay, surrounded by the Booderee National Park and coastal waters that are part of the Park and also of the New South Wales Jervis Bay Marine Park. It is located in the Jervis Bay Territory, a territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, forming the southern boundary of Jervis Bay. The land was acquired under the Jervis Bay Territory Acceptance Act 1915. In many respects, the naval facility is totally out of place, the consequence of political decisions made many years ago, in the early years of Federation. These stories and other parts of the College’s history are told elsewhere, but there is one part of the history that has received very little attention. Show more
