Abstract
The reasons for submarine acquisition in Indonesia are
explored against the general strategic context in Southeast Asia and
the country’s unique approach to the challenges it identifes is demonstrated,
not least through the concept of Indonesia as a Global Maritime
Fulcrum. The contribution that submarines are thought to make to
Indonesia’s security is discussed and the technological, economic and
demographic problems their acquisition poses are identifed.
