Abstract

The aims of this paper are twofold. First, I intend to outline the key themes of our research on the United States Asia-Pacific allies and partners and the issue of how to manage regional cooperation and competition. These are: (1) order and alliances in the Asia-Pacific; (2) the role of independent actors and their domestic politics; (3) Asias strategic geometries; and (4) the impact on Asia of the changing Sino-American relationship. Second, I will introduce some of the preliminary findings of this research. The intention here is to provide a basis for further discussion on the research direction of the Project. In particular, I will focus on five basic findings that cover: regional order, US policy, the US alliance system, multilateralism, and emerging powers.
